First impressions matter. A public rollout of a major policy, initiative, or news that your organization wants to make is the best opportunity to make an impression with the public and the media. Here's the five things that are key when you're thinking about your next major rollout:
1) Know your audience.
Who is the target audience you're trying to reach and how do you reach them? This is more important than ever in today's fractured media landscape. If you want your audience to see news of your rollout, you have to go to where they are. A good rollout and media plan always starts with the target audience in mind.
2) Know your plan.
Timing is everything. Shortening attention spans make it more difficult to grab someone. Before you conduct a successful rollout, make sure you know your plan. What's the product you're talking about? Who from your organization will be doing interviews? What are the target outlets for your rollout. All of this needs to be put together well in advance of the rollout so that you're ready on day 1.
3) Get organized.
If your rollout gets attention, folks will naturally have questions. Think through what those might be ahead of time and get prepared. Ensure that the messaging in your materials all lines up and complements each other. You only get to press "go" once, and you want to make sure you have everything buttoned up when you do.
4) Make connections.
Not all reporters are created equally. You need to know what reporters are likely to cover your issue set and make those connections ahead of time so that you're pitching the right thing to the right person. Nobody
5) Execute.
